Snowfencing is one of the most challenging projects we have been juggling with since we brought skiing back to Lowther Hill. The timber and working hours needed to snowfence the 1,600m of ski slopes at Lowther Hill would have normally been beyond the capacity of our volunteer-based club, particularly at this growth stage where there are many other projects that also require our attention. But thanks to some ingenuity and a great local support from our community we have managed to put ourselves ahead of schedule.

We are thrilled to report that our Alasdair Walker has recently been selected for the British Snowboard team, which can lead to selection for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He needs to raise £12,000 to go out abroad to train and compete against other top riders in Europe. Here's how we can all support him...

Webcam update - Have you noticed that our cameras have been down for a while? If you were wondering why, it’s because beginning late May, getting mobile data on the hill became all but impossible, and as you may know, these are the highest and remotest ‘off-the-grid’ webcams anywhere in the UK.

There is a wide variety of jobs to be done on and off the hill at Lowther Hills Ski Club. Last week weather conditions allowed us to finally finish a job that we started back in Autumn 2015.

Today our Pistebasher Appeal hit the £3,000 mark! Because of your support we're almost a third of the way to our target and closer than ever to buying the pistebasher. Thanks again from Lowther Hills Ski Club :-)

As you already know, we are currently raising funds for our own snow grooming machine, but you may not be aware that we have been working towards getting our own permanent snow fencing too.

Come and join us at Leadhills Nursery Slope on week nights Tuesday 19th, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st January for the Night Rider Sessions.

Lowther Hills Ski Club is a family-friendly, volunteer-run Community Interest Company that makes skiing possible in the Lowther Hills. The club oversees the legalities, administration, and management of the skiing facilities, and regularly holds work parties to build and maintain our equipment and run the ski tows.

We strive to run the tows for our members at least 20 days between December-March, but this season our core group of volunteers is not regularly available. We are looking to employ a keen snowsports enthusiast who can make him/herself available at short notice to run a tow for our friendly membership.

We are pleased to announce that Lowther Hills will be host to the 2016 SSSA Alpine Race Series.

Our webcam set-up is unique (winterhighland webcams on Lowther Hill ), it is not just at a high elevation, but it is entirely off-grid, communicating to the outside world over a mobile network and without a connection to mains electricity.

The weather is an element of Ski Club work life which is sometimes overlooked by those who follow our progress. We often find ourselves in a position where we have important jobs to do, and volunteers available to do them in their free time on a Saturday or Sunday, but adverse weekend weather conditions prevent us from progressing our plans.

On the other hand, our life is made easier by many businesses from our local area and beyond, who generously support our plans to make the Lowther Hills the mountain playground of the south of Scotland.

We are very sad to report that our temporary clubhouse on Whiteside was completely destroyed by Storm Desmond during the night of Saturday 5th December.

It is with great pride that we present this season's membership pass, designed by renown illustrator Andrew Foley (

Lowther Hills Ski Club is working with snowboard school The Northern Movement to provide snowsports instruction and coaching for our members this season 2015/16.
