Lowther Hills' first Olympian? Let's help Alasdair to head to the 2018 Winter Olympics
We are thrilled to report that our Alasdair Walker has recently been selected for the British Snowboard team, which can lead to selection for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He needs to raise £12,000 to go out abroad to train and compete against other top riders in Europe. Here's how we can all support him...
Alasdair, a 28 year old snowboarder from Dumfries, began snowboarding at the are of 14 after a school trip with Dumfries Academy and has been hooked ever since. A very skilled snowboarder, Alasdair has a BASI 2 snowboard instructor and a ISIA technical qualification, which is one of the hardest technical snowboard exams to pass. Last season, Alasdair started up his own Snowboard School – The Northern Movement, which teaches at Lowther Hills and all across Scotland.
You may have seen or been with Alasdair on the slopes. Last season he helped many LowtherHillites to learn or improve their snowboarding skills, both at Newmilns and in Leadhills. We have also enjoyed sharing the pain of getting eaten by midges during our fun summer work parties on the hill.
Alasdair always wanted to compete in SBX (Snowboard Cross - check out what SBX is all about: watch the final from Sochi 2014). This would not only help him to reach his goal of representing Team GB at the Olympics, but also helps Alasdair gain valuable FIS points that are required to reach his newer level in snowboarding and become a BASI trainer.
Last week Alasdair headed down south to Hemel Hempstead where the UK trials were being held. He impressed everybody and was selected straight into the GB team. He now has the chance to train and compete across Europe, and eventually to head over to Pyeongchang for the 2018 Winter Olympics if he performs well enough.
Now, British Snowboard Cross is a largely underfunded program. Unfortunately, athletes are asked to fund themselves all coaching, accommodation, competition fees, travel, lift passes, equipment, insurance, and living costs in order to represent their country at international competitions.
Alasdair is trying to raise £12,000 to pay for all that. Can we all help him?
Please support Alasdair with a small donation. He is due to leave to the Continent early in October to train and compete against other top riders in Europe and he needs all the support he can get. Visit his crowdfunding page at www.gofundme.com/2pnt58uc or get in touch with him at www.thenorthernmovement.com/contact-me if you can assist him in other way.
Let's show our support for Alasdair. Not only he is a very skilled snowboarder and an all-round nice guy. He is also the only top snowboard athlete to hail from the South of Scotland in a long time and we are very proud of him at Lowther Hills.
